VOTERS SHOULD KNOW

 

Recently I was asked to participate in a debate with the incumbent Register of Deed on FLAP TV. My opponent, Kathleen Daigneault declined to appear so I was given the opportunity to appear alone. Host Cindy Valiton asked me several pertinent questions and I would like to share them with everyone, especially those who do not have access to a computer or use this online format.

 

Many of you are aware I ran in the primary as a Democrat. After making the decision to continue with a write in campaign I became an “un-enrolled” voter. Many people are wondering why. Let me explain…the Register of Deeds is the most non-political political position there is. It has nothing to do with party ideologies but one must run a campaign in order to secure the job. It is not just Democrats or Republicans that purchase property. Everyone no matter what their party affiliation, can buy and sell property.

 

That being said, I need everyone’s vote: Democrat, Republican, Un-enrolled and anything in between.

 

Although I am not overly political, I am not naïve to the rule of politics. The Democrats elected the incumbent to represent them on the ballot in November and they expect all Democrats to follow the party line and vote for her. I ask not just Democrats, but all voters do their due diligence and research the candidates and the position. Just because someone is the party nominee doesn’t make her the best person to hold this very important position. Educate yourselves and cast an informed vote. I have almost 35 years as a real estate title examiner. Before the incumbent was elected to her first SIX year term, I did her title work when it was needed. I use the records of all Registries of Deeds daily. I know the documents and I understand their vital importance to real estate conveyances. There has not been a Register of Deeds in at least the last 30 years that has had practical working experience and knowledge to hold this position. The time has come for change and the time is now.

 

I would be remiss if I did not the other equally important reason for taking on this challenge. The Register of Deeds is a 6 year term. This will be the 3rd term for the incumbent, if she wins. Prior to the last election, WBZ-TV did an investigative report and found the incumbent spent very little time at the Registry of Deeds and her time away was not spent on Registry related work. Unfortunately this report was prohibited from airing prior to the election under the threat of a lawsuit. The reporter returned after the election and continued to gather film evidence that proved she was an absentee Register.

 

No one knew the reporter continued the investigation-obviously the Register thought she dodged a bullet when it wasn’t broadcast before the election-but after the fact she still wasn’t in the office. Having spent most days at the Registry of Deeds in Fitchburg I can personally tell you her absenteeism was well known, constant and documented. Did she apologize or offer to repay the salary she accepted but didn’t earn. I don’t believe she did. Keep in mind this is the FIRST election since that story aired.

 

With the political climate as it is, it is time to make our elected officials be accountable for their work (or lack thereof). It is time for a change. Please know that this is not meant to be “negative campaigning.” It is in fact all true. I have personally witnessed it, it is not coming to me second hand. I ask all voters to do the research before you cast your vote on November 6th. I would appreciate your WRITE IN vote for Patti Buckley for Register of Deeds. Thank you.
